In the spring of 1992, I went to Nicaragua to teach art and organize
community mural projects. I solicited donations from the Carleton College
Alfred J. Heslop Fund and Kativo S.A., a Nicaraguan paint company. While
in Nicaragua, I taught nine art classes in three different elementary
schools. I also organized three community mural projects, two with church
youth groups and one with a school.
This is a picture of one of the murals that we painted in the Iglesia
Elin in the barrio de Monte Tabor in Managua. The church is named after
Elin, the place of rest that the Israelites came to after they crossed
the Red Sea. The members of the church determined what was to be included
in the mural. The water was painted to run through the picture and overflow
into the church baptismal. In the river John is depicted baptizing Jesus.
The plants used in the mural ane similar to ones found in the community
surrounding the church.
